Free "Workplace Discrimination" Seminar in Orange County
GARDEN GROVE, March 18, 2009 – State Sen. Lou Correa (34th Dist.) joins with the Asian Pacific American Legal Center of Southern California (APALC) to host a presentation for small-business owners on immigration-related unfair employment practices. The free seminar will be on Friday, March 27, 2009, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Rancho Santiago Community College District building, located at 2323 North Broadway, Santa Ana, CA 92706. A complimentary light lunch will also be provided.
The seminar will cover laws, policies and practices that employers must be aware of in order to comply with federal standards on verifying the work eligibility of new employees without unfairly rejecting candidates based on their national origin or citizenship status. Such “workplace discrimination” is unfair and may subject an employer to penalties such as fines and back wages. The information presented at the seminar will be useful to employers, businesses and business associations.
The speaker will be Byron F. Wong, a senior trial attorney with the Office of Special Counsel (OSC) for Immigration Related Unfair Employment Practices. OSC, which is in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, was established in 1987 to protect U.S. citizens and other work-authorized individuals from employment discrimination based on their citizenship status.
The seminar will be conducted in English and participants are required to register with APALC. For more information or questions or to register for the event, please contact Theresa Tran or Mark Yoshida at: Theresa Tran (APALC) 12900 Garden Grove Blvd., Suite 220 Mark Yoshida (APALC) 1145 Wilshire Blvd., Second Floor |
